James Clear wrote something very insightful about mental toughness.
“Do the circumstances dictate your mood and emotions? Or do you choose your mood and emotions, and the situation is something you just respond to?
The less your mood depends on your circumstances, the more mentally tough you are.”
There is something important to learn here for anyone building a wealth business.
Our profession is full of reasons to be emotional. Markets fall. Clients panic. Regulations change. A large prospect chooses someone else. A key employee resigns. An acquisition takes longer than expected. There will always be enough external events to justify a bad day.
The real question is whether those events should also be allowed to dictate the way we lead.
One of the defining characteristics of exceptional entrepreneurs is not that they face fewer setbacks. It is that they refuse to outsource their emotional state to circumstances they cannot control. They understand that if their mood rises and falls with every market movement, every difficult client conversation or every business challenge, then they have quietly handed over the steering wheel of their lives to events they never controlled in the first place.
That doesn’t mean pretending everything is fine or suppressing emotions. It means recognizing that while we cannot always choose what happens to us, we can choose how we respond, how we think and how we lead through it.
Clients notice this more than we realize. Your team notices it even more.
Emotional steadiness is contagious…so is emotional volatility.
That is why leadership is ultimately less about managing markets and more about managing ourselves.
The markets will continue doing what markets have always done.
The more important question is this, “Who will you choose to become while they do?”
