A teacher in Texas asked her class a question.
“If there are 10 sheep and one sheep runs away, how many are left?”
A little boy raised his hand confidently.
“Zero,” he said.
The teacher smiled.
“That’s wrong. You don’t understand mathematics.”
The boy looked back at her and said, “I am right. It seems you probably don’t understand sheep.”
Reflect for a moment.
Because this is not a story about sheep.
This is a story about our profession.
Most financial professionals are trained like that teacher.
We understand mathematics.
Returns.
Standard deviation.
Asset allocation.
Sharpe ratios.
Benchmarks.
We know the formulas.
We know the models.
We know the theory.
But do we understand people?
Because investing does not happen in a spreadsheet.
It happens in the mind of a human being.
And human beings do not behave like equations.
They follow each other.
They panic together.
They get greedy together.
They act on stories.
Not numbers.
That is why when markets fall, investors don’t calmly rebalance their portfolios.
They run.
Just like the sheep.
And when one runs, others follow.
Not because of mathematics.
But because of behavior.
This is where the real work of an MFD begins.
You are not in the business of selecting the best fund.
You are not in the business of explaining complex strategies.
You are not even in the business of predicting markets.
You are in the business of understanding people.
Their fears.
Their biases.
Their reactions.
Their stories.
And then helping them navigate all of that.
Because the difference between success and failure in investing is rarely knowledge.
It is behavior.
And behavior cannot be solved with more data.
It is solved with better conversations.
Better questions.
Better guidance.
If you feel the urge to impress a client with your knowledge.
Ask yourself.
Do I understand mathematics, or do I understand people?
Because if you truly understand people.
You will not just manage money.
You will change lives.
