Did the headline come across as odd or out of place?
Odd as it may be, there is an important lesson in it for all of us.
In his book “True Professionalism – The Courage to Care About Your People, Your Clients and Your Career”, David H Maister wrote, “Tom Peters once quoted Ray Kroc, the founder of McDonald’s, to the effect that, to succeed at McDonald’s, ‘you must be able to see the beauty in a burger bun.’ Most so-called sophisticated professionals laugh when they hear this, but just a few moments of reflection should make it clear that Mr. Kroc was right. You can’t become the world leader in a business without truly caring, passionately, about what you do.
The lesson is clear: Believe passionately in what you do, and never knowingly compromise your standards and values. Act like a true professional, aiming for true excellence, and the money will follow.”
The Beauty in a Burger Bun principle applies to us as well. Along with beauty, there is transformational power in the work we do. We care. We make a real difference. We help people live the life they have imagined with their money. We transform lives (across generations).
The questions then to reflect on are…
a. Do you recognize the beauty and the power of the work you do?
b. Do you care enough about what you do?
c. Are you acting like a true professional aiming for excellence?
You can take a few moments to reflect (truthfully) on these questions.
Needless to say, you have the potential to become a world leader in our industry/profession.
But are you taking steps to realize this potential?
