In his book “Essentialism – The Disciplined Pursuit of Less”, Greg McKeown wrote,
“The word priority came into the English language in the 1400s. It was singular.
Priority.
It meant the very first or prior thing. It stayed singular for the next five hundred years. Only in the 1900s did we pluralise the term and start talking about priorities. Illogically, we reasoned that by changing the word, we could bend reality. Somehow, we would now be able to have multiple first things. People and companies routinely try to do that.”
I have been guilty of this. And I am sure you would too.
We have a list of Priorities – Priority 1, Priority 2, Priority 3 and so on. This creates an illusion of many things being our priorities but actually nothing is.
These priorities cause us to be busy leaving no time for real and essential work.
I have made it my priority to remove the non-essential activities from my professional (as well as my personal) life.
What about you?
