Shane Parrish in his blog Farnam Street wrote “Everyone looks for the miracle moment – the moment when success happens.
We are drawn to these moments because we want to know the secret. We want to know the ingredient we are missing. The ingredient that makes the recipe.”
We think there is just that one thing missing between us and success. And if we find the answer, we will be successful too. Therefore, amateurs ask this question “Just tell me how to do it”.
Shane continued further, “The problem is …there is no miracle moment. If you want to understand success, you can’t focus on what’s visible.
Results are simply one more step in a long chain of steps that led to that moment.
Nature offers a great example with bamboo, which takes up to 5 years to develop its roots. For years, to the outside observer, no visible progress has been made. Meanwhile, the bamboo grows below the surface, developing its roots and storing energy. Then all at once, it starts to grow. Years of stored energy result in exponential growth, sometimes reaching over 50 feet in a matter of weeks.
That’s how results happen. Slowly and then all at once.”
On the other hand, everyone wants the results. No one wants the process that leads to them. That’s boring.
Isn’t that true for investing and compounding too?
That’s why many investors want excitement and new things. And many of you might have been eager to oblige prospects and clients with something exciting and new.
We all know that one workout will not do much for us. Neither will two. But working out daily will lead to exponential results.
Similarly, one or two meetings will not move the needle. You need to have a solid client acquisition discipline (as well as a solid value proposition) to have an amazing list of clients who trust you with their entire financial life.
The miracle moment is in recognizing that there is no miracle moment. It is at this point you recognize that all progress is visible and that consistently doing boring things will lead to extreme outperformance.
I am committed to this outperformance with my New Day Resolutions.
How about you?
