There are things we do that take us towards our goals whether it’s the firm we want to build or the life we want to live. We make progress when we do them.
Some examples from your daily life include taking care of your mind and body, playing a sport/listening to music, reading, spending time with loved ones, making a difference in someone’s life and so on. In the context of building our ideal firm, (besides the ones I mentioned above) it’s the time invested in prospecting, client acquisition, writing, taking decisions, people, processes, technology and many others.
On the other hand, there are things we do that take us away from our goals.
Overthinking, delaying decisions, worrying, playing office-office and being busy on many useless tasks are some of the ones.
The lesson here is – Anything we do either takes us towards our goals or away from our goals.
The important question we should ask ourselves every time we do something is the following.
Is what I am doing now taking me towards my goals or away from it?
The answer to this question will guide you in the right direction.
It might not be possible to completely eliminate the things that take us away from our goals and it’s fine. Don’t beat yourself over it. But what’s super important is that the majority of the things you do in a day, week, month and NOW are things that take you towards your goals.
A Short Exercise.
1. List down all the things you do in a day. Start with the ones you did today.
2. Create a table with 2 columns – Towards and Away.
3. Every activity under either of these 2 columns.
4. Ask yourself these 2 questions – What did you do well? What needs work?
This is a quick review that you can do every day. It’s something that has been helping me and is something that I guarantee will help you too. The only condition being you do it.
