Morgan Housel wrote about an insightful exchange regarding Costco founder Jim Sinegal. When podcaster David Senra asked Charlie Munger why Sinegal rarely gave speeches or interviews, Munger’s response was simple: “He was busy working.”
This single line speaks volumes. It highlights a truth that’s increasingly rare in our hyper-connected world. The most impressive people don’t spend their time chasing likes, retweets, or managing their publicity. They are focused on their craft. They are building, creating, and solving problems. Their energy is spent on what truly matters—not the noise around it.
For financial professionals, this is a powerful lesson. This profession is built on trust, relationships, and results. Yet, it’s easy to get distracted by the allure of social media, industry accolades, or superficial metrics of success. While these may feel satisfying in the moment, they don’t move the needle for your clients or your business.
Jim Sinegal built Costco into a retail juggernaut not by shouting about his work, but by doing it. He was focused on delivering value—both to his customers and his employees. That focus is what made him extraordinary.
As a financial professional, the real value lies in serving your clients, refining your processes, and building something that lasts (and delivering a world class client experience). Spending hours on social media or chasing attention might feel productive, but ask yourself: Is this adding real value? Is this serving your clients? How is this helping you master your craft?
Success doesn’t come from noise; it comes from focus. It comes from consistently showing up, doing the work, and letting your results speak for themselves. Be like Sinegal—busy working on what matters, not distracted by what doesn’t.
As Frank Ocean said, “Work Hard in silence. Let success be your noise.”
