I often hear this line “Give me a Demo” when it comes to a Software Product. This has almost become a standard and everyone has accepted this as a way of doing things. However, I feel that when people come to a Demo, they come with something I call the Demo Mindset or the Audit Mindset. They start thinking like auditors.
Sadly, many people think the role of an auditor is to find gaps and shortcomings. I have even seen seasoned auditors guilty of these mistakes. Sometimes they miss out what is amazing in products and obsess about finding “what’s not there” in the products. This is because many have been trained to think in a certain way.
Take the example of the first car you sat in. It might not have been the best but was it better than faster horses. Yes, 10X better. You did not think about what was missing or point out 10 things that were not there; you focused on learning how to drive it and then getting better at driving. This is because you adopted an Experience Mindset.
Let us now say you have gone to buy a car with your family. Do you take a demo of all car features for 1 hour or do you take the car for a test drive with your family?
When you experience a product, you see it from the lens of a customer and the focus is on how you feel (and whether it feels right). When you take a demo, the focus is on finding shortcomings and missing things.
Experience the Product like you experience a sport (by playing it) or like you listen to music (the way it feels).
Action Point – Adopt an Experience Mindset (It might not be easy for you, but you got to start somewhere if you want to get better). If you want to really implement this mindset, you can do so by experiencing our Conversational Tools or the Happyness Factory platform, where you can experience it like an End User; go through the Experience with your spouse or with a client and his/her spouse. See how it feels.
