All of us will be surrounded with 3 types of people.
- People who we can learn from:
I cannot state how important these people are for your personal and professional growth. There will be 1 or 2 such folks (even a team) in your life whose wisdom will take you to the next level. However, identifying them also requires skill and an eye for detail because we live in a world of constant noise and so much overload. Any person who raises his/her hand is made an expert not to mention so many self-congratulatory and self-appointed experts. Additionally, there are many outfits who will promote mediocrity for expertise as this helps them promote their own offerings. Most of these experts are either people who are like you or slightly better than you and some who you can teach. Get a wise Coach who will hold you accountable for actually doing things.
- People who are like us (our Peers):
This will make the bulk of people you will be surrounded with. While you can get quick fixes done with this group and learn linearly with them, you cannot grow exponentially by constantly being exposed to this group. - People who we can teach:
You will learn a lot by teaching others. The best teacher is often one who can simplify complex concepts and even explain a child as young as 8-10 years. These teachers are the ones who not only truly understand the subject but also learn while teaching.
By the way there is a big difference between a Mentor and Coach (will write a Nano on this someday). Everyone might have mentors but only the best have coaches.
